The original Earl Grey tea was named after Charles Grey the Second Earl Grey in the 18th century who commissioned a Chinese mandarin to blend a tea to suit the water at his family home. Bergamot was added to offset lime in the local water and a very special tea was born proving popular amongst the social elite.
